Life has a way of surprising us. One moment we're cruising along, feeling in control, and the next we're blindsided by circumstances we never saw coming. But what if I told you that while you might be surprised, God never is? We serve a preparing God who knows exactly what's ahead and equips us for every season before we even arrive there.

What Does It Mean That God Is a Preparing God?

God is not surprised by anything that happens in your life. While you and I might feel knocked off our feet by unexpected circumstances, wondering "How did I even get here?", God has been preparing us for these moments long before they arrive.

This preparation often happens in our innermost being, shaping us into the person we need to be before we even reach that destination. It's like expecting your first child - suddenly you find yourself in situations that teach you patience, structure, and unconditional love, preparing you for parenthood before the baby even arrives.

Learning from Joseph's Journey: A Life of Preparation

The story of Joseph in Genesis perfectly illustrates how God prepares us through life's ups and downs. Joseph's journey shows us that preparation doesn't always look like what we'd expect.

Starting with Favor

Joseph began his story as the favored child, receiving the famous coat of many colors from his father. This teaches us something crucial: you are God's favorite child. You are favored by God not because of your perfection or good behavior, but because of who you are in Christ.

Grace is unmerited favor. You were born again favored by God, period. This favor doesn't guarantee an easy life, but it does guarantee God's presence through every circumstance.

Experiencing Betrayal

Despite being favored, Joseph faced betrayal when his brothers sold him into slavery. This reveals an important truth: you can be favored and still experience betrayal. Being loved by God doesn't exempt you from being hurt by others.

If you're going through betrayal right now, remember that it doesn't mean God has stopped loving you or forgotten about you. God already saw that betrayal coming and still has a plan to use it for His glory.

Facing False Accusations

Joseph's reputation came under attack when Potiphar's wife falsely accused him. Even when lies are told about you and your reputation is damaged, God still has favor on your life. The devil is the accuser, but God is your defender.

Like Jesus, who stood silent before His accusers, sometimes the best response is to rest in the fact that God knows the truth and will deliver you in His timing.

Being Forgotten

After interpreting dreams in prison, Joseph was forgotten for two years by someone who could have helped him. Feeling forgotten is one of life's loneliest seasons, but even when people forget you, God never does.

God orchestrates timing perfectly. That forgotten season was preparing Joseph for the moment when Pharaoh would need a dream interpreter - exactly when God intended.

How God Prepares Us for Future Seasons

Blessing Before Famine

When Joseph interpreted Pharaoh's dream about seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine, we see God's preparation principle clearly. God provides blessing before difficulty to prepare us for what's ahead.

You might be in a season of blessing right now that's actually God preparing you for challenges to come. God is always ahead of the enemy - there's no sneak attack that catches God off guard.

Provision Before Need

God knows what you need before you even ask. He has already provided the answer for your famine before you even get there. Whatever spiritual or physical drought you may face, God has already given you the blessing and provision needed for that season.

The key is having wisdom to receive and steward well what God has given you. What is God blessing you with right now that He wants you to manage wisely for future seasons?

What Does It Mean to See God's Hand in Difficult Circumstances?

When Joseph's brothers came to him during the famine, afraid of his revenge, Joseph's response reveals the heart of someone who understood God's preparation: "You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people" (Genesis 50:20).

Joseph had every right to be bitter, but he recognized that while people and the enemy may intend harm, God works all things together for good for those who love Him. The same principle applied to Jesus - the devil thought he won at the cross, but God had prepared that moment from the foundation of the world for our salvation.

How Do We Prepare for Heaven?

The ultimate preparation isn't for earthly seasons but for eternity. Joseph died with faith in God's promises, asking that his bones be taken to the Promised Land because he believed God's promises were true even beyond death.

Being prepared for heaven isn't about living a perfect life or never being flawed. It's about walking in the forgiveness that Jesus has given you. Joseph could have died in bitterness, but because of God's grace, he was able to extend that same grace to those who had hurt him.

Life Application

This week, examine your current season through the lens of God's preparation. Instead of asking "Why is this happening to me?", ask "How might God be preparing me through this?" Look for ways He might be developing character, teaching you skills, or positioning you for future opportunities to serve others.

Consider these questions:

  • What blessings has God given you recently that you should steward wisely for future seasons?
  • Are you holding onto bitterness from past betrayals or hurts that might be hindering God's preparation work in your life?
  • How can you extend the same grace and forgiveness to others that God has shown you?
  • In what ways do you need to trust God's timing rather than trying to control your circumstances?

Remember, God is not just preparing you for the next season - He's preparing you for eternity. Walk in the forgiveness and favor He's already given you, knowing that He works all things together for good for those who love Him.
